Ah, and the exception to this rule is if you marry a foreigner (non Japanese citizen), in that case you must both keep your name and a child takes the Japanese name in the Japanese jurisdiction, and the spouses name in the other jurisdictions (in our case).

I think it’s that one or the other has to choose which name to take, you can’t both keep your name. A friend of ours did the thing where the husband took the wife’s name, so this seems a bit misleading. But it’d be best if you can keep both your names if you want, surely. https://t.co/hlxMLNmQRm
